Most people harvest their first flush, eat well for a few days, and set the block aside thinking it's finished. It isn't. A healthy mushroom block still holds enough mycelium and nutrients to fruit two or three more times. Getting there just takes a little understanding of what the block actually needs between harvests.

What's Left in the Block After the First Flush

When mushrooms fruit, the mycelium draws heavily on the moisture and nutrients stored in the substrate. After harvest, the block isn't depleted. It's dehydrated. The mycelium network is still alive and capable of fruiting again. What it needs is time to recover and then a trigger to pin.

That trigger is the same thing that causes mushrooms to fruit in the wild: a drop in temperature, an increase in humidity, and a return of oxygen flow. At home, you replicate this through rest, rehydration, and returning the block to fruiting conditions. The process is simple, but the timing matters.

How Long to Rest Between Flushes

After your first harvest, remove any remaining mushroom stubs at the base (they can invite contamination if left). Then let the block rest.

For oyster mushrooms, the rest period is short. The mycelium recovers quickly, and you can often see new pins forming within five to ten days without doing anything beyond continuing to mist. For lion's mane, the recovery is similarly fast, though the mycelium is more delicate and benefits from consistent humidity rather than aggressive intervention. Shiitake blocks need longer, at least two to three weeks of rest before rehydration, and can hold for months without losing viability.

During rest, you can keep the block in a cool, dry location or leave it in the fruiting chamber with reduced misting. The goal is to allow surface moisture to dry down without fully desiccating the interior.

The Re-Soak Method

Once the block has rested, rehydration is what kicks off the next flush. The approach varies by species.

Oyster mushrooms: A full soak is rarely needed. Continue misting two to three times daily. If pinning stalls after ten to fourteen days, a brief soak of 20 minutes with the cut side down in a bowl of room-temperature water is usually enough to restart activity. If the same opening is sluggish, flip the block and cut a new slit on the opposite side.

Lion's mane: Treat it gently. If soaking, limit it to five to ten minutes. Lion's mane mycelium is more sensitive to prolonged submersion than oyster, and over-soaking can cause the surface to break down before pinning occurs. Shiitake and denser hardwood blocks: These benefit from a full submersion soak. Place the block in a bucket or large container, weigh it down so it stays submerged, and soak for four to six hours in clean, room-temperature water (around 65 to 70°F). Avoid chlorinated tap water if possible. After soaking, drain and let the block sit cut-side down for 30 to 60 minutes before returning it to fruiting conditions. Do not soak for more than 12 hours. Beyond that, the risk of bacterial growth increases and the mycelium begins to lose oxygen.

What Comes After Rehydration

Think of your fruiting block like a rechargeable battery after the first use. It drained during fruiting, but it isn't dead. It just needs a recharge before the next run. The re-soak is the charger. Skip it too soon and the block won't have enough stored energy to push new growth. Wait too long or overdo the soak and you risk shorting it out. Get the timing right and it comes back with another full cycle of output. Not as much as the first charge, but plenty worth the effort.

After rehydration, return the block to your fruiting chamber and resume normal misting and airflow. Pins typically begin forming within three to seven days. Place the block back in the same orientation it fruited from before, unless you've cut a new opening.

Maintain relative humidity around 80 to 90%, provide gentle fresh air exchange to prevent CO2 buildup, and keep temperatures in the appropriate range for your species. Oyster mushrooms fruit well at 60 to 75°F. Lion's mane prefers the cooler end of that range. Shiitake is more flexible but fruits best around 55 to 65°F for a cold-shocked block.

Yield Reality: What to Expect

The second flush will not match the first. A realistic expectation is 40 to 60% of the original yield from the second harvest, and less again from the third. The mycelium has used some of its nutrient reserves and the substrate degrades slightly with each cycle. This is normal and expected, not a sign that anything went wrong.

Most blocks will fruit two to three times before they're genuinely spent. Some oyster blocks push a fourth flush with good technique. Shiitake blocks held in cool, stable conditions can sometimes go further, though yields diminish each round.

The practical question is whether the third or fourth flush is worth the effort given the time and conditions required. For most home growers, two solid flushes from each block is a satisfying and efficient outcome. When to Call It Done

A block is genuinely exhausted when it stops producing pins despite correct conditions, or when contamination takes hold. Green, black, or blue mold anywhere on the block is a clear sign to stop and compost it. A sour or ammonia-like smell from the substrate interior is another indicator that bacterial activity has overtaken the mycelium.

If the block looks healthy but simply won't pin after three or more weeks post-rehydration, it has likely used up its available nutrients. At that point, composting it is the right move. Some reduction in yield from first to second flush is normal regardless. A 40 to 60% drop is expected, but very sparse fruiting often points to environmental conditions rather than a depleted block.

5. How many flushes can I realistically get?

Two to three flushes from most blocks with good technique. Some oyster blocks will push a fourth, particularly pink and blue varieties that are aggressive fruiters.
