How does the tree planting actually work?
When you place a refill order, $1.29 of that purchase goes to Earth Lungs — our reforestation partner operating in the Mombasa mangrove ecosystem in Kenya. At $0.43 per tree, that funds exactly 3 trees. GoodAPI tracks and verifies every planting using Veritree and issues a monthly certificate confirming your trees are in the ground.
Who is Earth Lungs and why mangroves?
Earth Lungs is a certified reforestation organization that works in the mangrove forests on Kenya's coast — the world's largest continuous mangrove ecosystem. Mangroves sequester carbon at a rate 4x higher than tropical rainforests and protect coastlines from erosion. Earth Lungs, alongside Antoine Moses, broke the Guinness World Record in May 2026 for most trees planted in a single day.
Can I redirect my contribution to ocean plastic cleanup instead?
Yes — add a note to your order that says "plastic cleanup" and we'll redirect your $0.05 environmental contribution toward verified ocean plastic removal rather than tree planting. Both are real, tracked, and impactful — it's just a matter of where you want your impact to land.
Does this apply to all orders or just refills?
Right now, the Refill & Reforest program applies specifically to certain eligible products available to logged-in customers. Refills are how we keep packaging waste low and pass savings on to you — the sustainability benefits compound in both directions. First-time purchases of standard products don't currently include the reforestation contribution, but we're exploring expanding it.
How do I find the refill pouches?
Refill pouches are available exclusively to returning customers. Log in to your account and you'll see refill options on eligible product pages. If you're a first-time customer, grab a jar first — refills will be waiting for you on your next visit.
What is 1% For The Planet?
1% for the Planet is a global network of businesses that donate 1% of revenue to certified environmental nonprofits. Happenstence is a member — 1% of every sale goes to certified environmental causes through the network. In your cart, you can also direct your donation to the Central Texas Food Bank or the Soil Health Institute instead. Either way, the donation comes from our profits, no surcharge on your order.
