In Austin, spring is less of a season and more of a feeling—one that usually involves a little bit of humidity, the smell of spicy citrus steam, and a patio full of good people. On March 21, 2026, the 4th Annual Happenstence Crawfish Boil officially took over the legendary Half Step Bar at 75½ Rainey St.
As your neighbor in a lab coat, I can tell you that "resilience" isn't just a buzzword for soil health; it’s a requirement for hosting outdoor events in Texas. Despite the rescheduling from rain a few weeks ago, the community showed up in full force. We served over 180lbs of crawfish, alongside mountains of sausage, corn, potatoes, garlic, and mushrooms.

One of the absolute highlights of the afternoon was witnessing the "First Peel." We had several guests from out of the country (Canada and France) who had never experienced a crawfish boil before. Watching them navigate their first mudbug under the guidance of our regular community members was exactly why we host these events. The verdict? They loved it. There is something about the ritual of a boil that transcends language—it is messy, social, and deeply rewarding.
For those who missed out, the plates were loaded. From our $20 Early Bird trays to the massive Group Plates that fed teams of four, the kitchen was moving as fast as Adi Rao & Friends were playing. By 3:00 PM, the live music was in full swing, and the Half Step patio vibes were truly immaculate.

Think of a crawfish boil like a healthy garden bed. You have your "keystone species" (the crawfish), your "nutrient fixers" (the potatoes and corn), and your "pollinators" (the live music and cocktails). Individually, they are great, but when you put them all on one tray in the sunshine, they create a thriving ecosystem. Our community is the soil that holds it all together. Without you, it’s just a pile of spicy bugs; with you, it’s a neighborhood institution.
We believe that high-performance living shouldn't stop just because it's the weekend. This year, we introduced the Crawfish & Capsule Bundle, pairing a full tray of mudbugs with a 60-count bottle of our dual-extract mushroom capsules. Whether you chose Cordyceps for that post-boil energy boost or Lion's Mane for Sunday morning clarity, it was the perfect way to bring the Happenstence lab home with you.
We also debuted our exclusive $20 Lone Ranger Tees. These limited-edition shirts flew off the racks, but if you missed out, keep an eye on our Austin Events Page for the next drop.
If you missed us on Rainey Street, don't sweat it. We are keeping the momentum going through the rest of the spring season:

Our team moved over 180lbs of fresh crawfish this year! Every plate included a full tray of mudbugs, sausage, corn, potatoes, garlic, and mushrooms, ensuring nobody left the Half Step patio hungry.
While this was our main annual spring event, we are always looking for ways to bring the community together. Check our Events Calendar for future pop-up dates and maybe another boil this spring!
The Lone Ranger Tees were a limited event-only run, but we often bring back popular designs for our online shop. You can still purchase our mushroom capsules and bundles anytime through our website!
Beyond the seasoning, it’s about the science and the community. We prioritize high-quality ingredients (like our added functional mushrooms in the boil) and create a space where local Austin culture meets ancestral health practices.
